Szymon Goldberg and Miyoko Yamane’s CollectionⅣ

February 8 - April 23, 2024

Theme: Szymon Goldberg as a soloist and pianist (2) Miyoko Yamane

Szymon Goldberg (1909-1993) was one of the leading violinists and conductors of the 20th century. Focusing on the pianists with whom Szymon performed as a soloist, we will introduce materials highlighting the performance activities with Goldberg over two periods. Following on from the first installment of the series, which featured Radu Lupu, the series' second installment centers around Miyoko Yamane (1939-2006), a pianist and wife of Goldberg with whom he spent the final years of his life. At the age of 14, Yamane was the youngest Japanese exchange student at the time to study at Conservatoire de Paris before moving to the US. She actively performed in the US, Europe, and subsequently Japan after returning in 1977. In 1988, she married Goldberg, and relocated permanently to Japan in 1992, staying at the Tateyama Kokusai Hotel at the foot of Mount Tateyama until Goldberg's death in 1993. She remained in Toyama until her sudden passing in 2006 during The Koshinokuni Festival of Chamber Music, for which she served as the musical director. We invite you to imagine the couple in their early days together surrounded by art, and trace the trajectory of their activities as a couple who were passionate about music throughout their entire lives.
