IPT Chronicle 1985-2021
The International Poster Triennial in Toyama, an event in which the museum accepts poster submissions from around the world, judges, and exhibits them, is held once every three years, and it will be held this year.
This season's Design Collection will feature a curated selection of works that won the Grand Prix or other top awards in each category from the past 13 IPTs from the first one in 1985 to the 13th one in 2021. In addition, posters from IPT's past public competitions and exhibitions will be on display, allowing visitors to view the IPT posters themselves as a chronology (chronicle).
As digital devices and media become more widespread, opportunities to see posters printed on paper are becoming less common. The IPT, which has been running since 1985, has been held multiple times over the past 40 years or so as if to watch over this process.
Looking closely at past award-winning works, many are used to raise awareness of social issues, advertise stores such as department stores and products, announce plays, concerts, and exhibitions, and promote new films and music. Some of them have contents that reflect the social conditions of each era, while others catch the eyes of viewers with their universal and skillful messages and graphic designs.
These are combined with materials and techniques such as the texture of the paper and printing technology to leave a deeper impression of the message conveyed to the viewer.
Today, we are inundated with more visual information than ever before, transcending media such as paper and digital. What will these posters displayed all at once say to us?
