Goldberg and Aspen
Interactions with Herbert Bayer
Szymon Goldberg (1909-1993) was a Polish-born Jewish violinist and conductor who experienced two world wars, and lived through the turbulent 20th century until his death in Toyama. The works of art collected by Szymon Goldberg and donated by his wife, Miyoko, in 2006 are introduced in this exhibition.
The largest proportion of works in the Goldberg collection donated to the museum are by the Austrian-born, multi-talented artist Herbert Bayer(1900-1985). The two men were involved in the Aspen Institute (Colorado) from its earliest days, with Goldberg as a musician and Bayer as an artist. This exhibition will introduce materials from the estate of Goldberg held by The Center for Music Research at Tokyo University of the Arts that suggest the interaction between the two through the town of Aspen, as well as works by Bayer that were cherished by Goldberg and his wife.
