Message from Director

The Museum of Modern Art, Toyama was moved to Fugan Unga Kansui Park on the northern side of Toyama Station and reopened in 2017 under the new name Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design.
Our museum has one of the greatest art collections of the 20th century in Japan, which includes works by Picasso, Chagall, Miro, Duchamp, Pollock, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon. We also have a collection of designs such as posters and chairs. The Onomatopoeia Rooftop also has unique play equipment using designs by Taku Satoh based on onomatopoeia such as “guru-guru (whirling)” and “hiso-hiso (whisper)”. In addition, the outdoor plaza welcomes visitors with a large bear sculpture—which can be said to be the symbol of the museum—created by Atsuhiko Misawa. Ever since the museum opened, a variety of exhibitions and events have been held for visitors to see, learn, play, enjoy, create and express. The total number of visitors reached three million in June 2021.
Today, the museum has become an art gallery that is visited by many for its collection and wide-ranging exhibitions of art works and designs as well as a place where you can hear the voices of children as they look upon the Tateyama Mountain Range from the Onomatopoeia Rooftop and enjoy workshops at the atelier.
We hope to continue to be an art museum that is popular among many people, from children to adults, including the local residents of Toyama Prefecture and art lovers, and be a place where visitors can enjoy a moment of happiness.
