Takiguchi Shuzo and Kano Mitsuo : Semiotics of the storm Petrel
The Encounter,Correspondence and Creation of a Poet and an Artist

November 1 - December 25, 2019

Shuzo Takiguchi [1903-1979] is a poet born in Toyama who was active in the field of art criticism from pre-war years to the post-war period. Takiguchi was close to many artists of his time including Mitsuo Kano [born in 1933], who was 30 years younger than him and with whom he was widely known to have exchanged creative correspondences for over a quarter of a century.

Mitsuo Kano is a leading post-war artist who has been highly regarded from the 1950s both in Japan and abroad for his unique graphic prints. Kano never shied away from new challenges and has focused on the production of colorful paintings since 1980s. Since the death of Takiguchi, Kano has continued to be aware of the presence of Takiguchi.
This exhibition presents the representative works of Kano from the early years of his career to his more recent works, as well as the jointly produced works and correspondences of Takiguchi and Kano, with the aim of illuminating the spirit and creative impulse of two artists who have had a profound influence on each other.
