The World of Tomino Yoshiyuki: A Retrospective of Legendary Anime Director
– Gundam, Ideon, and Now

November 28, 2020 - January 24, 2021

This exhibition looks back on the career of Tomino Yoshiyuki [born in 1941 in Kanagawa Prefecture], a screenwriter, songwriter, and director of animated films who was involved in various productions over the span of more than half a century.

Six museums will be planning and hosting this exhibition, and each one has chosen a different catchphrase for the event. This museum's catchphrase is "GUNDAM faces Mt. Tateyama at the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design."

This exhibition consists of 6 parts presenting the history and development of works that Tomino produced with a focus on the idea that "animation is Film." Through an extensive range of materials such as storyboards by Tomino himself and concept art by the creators with whom he worked, the exhibition offers a comprehensive look at Tomino's career, including his works as a young boy; his early works such as the animated TV show Astro Boy by TEZUKA PRODUCTIONS, in which he made his debut as a producer; his most famous work, the MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM series, which had its 40th anniversary last year; and the works he has directed in recent years.

This is the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design's first animated film exhibition. It will be full of noteworthy features such as video installations, allowing visitors to enjoy the world of Director Tomino to the fullest. Plus, original goods for this exhibition as well as goods exclusive to the Toyama exhibition will be available to purchase.
