"Characters and Posters"
This exhibit features works from our poster collection, presented under the theme of "characters and posters." Posters are a medium used to impart to us a variety of information, and one that transcends language to convey messages visually. As vital elements of graphic design, letters and characters serve a critical role on posters that goes beyond merely conveying information. Unlike the pre-set fonts we use when typing on computers and elsewhere, graphic designers invent their own original fonts for posters, and experiment with a diverse array of expressive techniques to find interesting elements within the shapes of words themselves. We hope that visitors will come and enjoy the fun and expressive richness to be found within letters and characters, and see 30 poster pieces from Japan and abroad which feature different print types, originally-created fonts, hand-written lettering, and unfamiliar letters and characters from the past.
In addition, we have partially changed exhibit works from our chair collection, and will also be introducing the three latest pieces from graphic designer Kazumasa Nagai's poster series "LIFE", which he creates for our museum every year.
