The Work of Shiro KURAMATA: A Microcosmos of Memory
February 17 - April 7, 2024
Shiro Kuramata(1934-1991)is a designer who continues to receive high praise and influence in the field of design, even after more than 30 years since his passing. His work, which includes acrylic, glass, and architectural metal materials, primarily focuses on furniture and interior design, sometimes influenced by contemporary art. It continues to captivate people while also questioning design and societal circumstances.
This exhibition, named after Shiro Kuramata, is the first of its kind in nearly a decade. It showcases his work from his early 20s before he became an independent designer, to the furniture and interior designs he created until his sudden passing at the age of 56. The exhibition follows a chronological order, intertwining 7 chairs from our collection, including ‘Miss Blanche’(1988) with the presentation of materials that introduce his work during that period. Additionally, it attempts to convey the essence of "Shiro Kuramata the person" through his dream diary, image sketches, personal library, records, and his own words.
