MINGEI: The Beauty of Everyday Things

July 13 - September 23, 2024

About 100 years ago, philosopher Soetsu Yanagi advocated for the popular handicraft mingei. Under this concept of mingei, one loves the beauty in everyday life and thinks of its materials and creators. This concept is regarded today as essential again, and it continues to become familiar in our lives.
This exhibition will explore the theme of clothing, food and housing in relation to mingei, and will display approximately 150 beautiful objects, which have been used in our lives. Also, this exhibition visits the still existing producing areas of mingei and introduces the creators who work there and the handwork that is handed down there. Moreover, one of the highlights is an installation that merges mingei with the lifestyle of the present age and is from Terry Ellis / Keiko Kitamura (MOGI Folk Art directors), who had been successful for a long time as directors at select shop BEAMS until the year before last and have played significant roles in the present mingei trend.
