Shuzo Takiguchi and Joan Miró: Correspondences and Illustrated Books
Your eyes, your hands, your breasts... / you are a single pair of twins.
Shuzo Takiguchi/ Joan Miró “Ma de Proverbis a Joan Miró” Ediciones Poligrafa S.A. Since1970
In 1940, Shuzo Takiguchi published the world's earliest monograph on Joan Miró, Miró (Western Art Library 48) (Atelier Sha). Then, in 1958, Takiguchi traveled to Europe as Japan's representative and juror for the Venice Biennale, and although he hoped to meet Miró during his trip, they were unable to do so.
And so, while maintaining a continued interest in Miró, the two finally met in 1966 on the occasion of Miró's first visit to Japan. Afterwards, their relationship culminated in two collaborative illustrated books: Ma de Proverbis (1970), and En compagnie des étoiles de Miró(1978). Through the two illustrated books, works and letters from the former Takiguchi collection that shed light on their creation process, and other related materials, this exhibition considers the kinds of issues Takiguchi and Miró shared and how they inspired one another.
This exhibition, commemorating the 120th anniversary of the birth of Shuzo Takiguchi, is the third in a series of joint exhibitions held since 2023 as part of our museum's collection exhibition, organized by our museum and the Keio University Art Center, which share the Shuzo Takiguchi archives. For this installment, the shared works and materials will be exhibited together for the first time as part of this joint project. Through these 'things' from Takiguchi 's collection, being reunited after a long time, we hope you will deepen your understanding.
