HOTCH POTCH: Illustrations and Works of Ryuji Fujieda
February 7 - April 5, 2026

With a career spanning over half a century as an illustrator and art director, Ryuji Fujieda (1943-) continues to work energetically to this day. His activities are diverse, ranging from picture books and book design to art direction for advertising and television. In 1996, the puppet show HOTCH POTCH STATION, for which he handled art direction, began broadcasting on NHK Educational TV (now E-TV). His pop, warm designs were embraced by a wide range of generations, leading to a popular series that continued with “Quintet”,“Fuku Buku Lo”, and“Korenande Shokai”. In addition, he has held solo exhibitions at Tokyo’s HB Gallery almost annually since 1987—totaling over 30 shows—and continues to present new illustrations. The world of Ryuji Fujieda keeps expanding.
This exhibition is his first large-scale retrospective, featuring over 500 works including illustrations from picture books, book designs, and solo exhibitions, as well as art direction works for television—such as his puppet shows—and advertising.
