TAD Collection I

April 23 - July 7, 2026

TAD Collection I features artworks from the museum’s collection across five sections: four thematic collections—“Cubism and Its Influence,” “The World of Reflections,” “Urban Melancholy,” and “Stripes”—alongside the special exhibit “Dubuffet and Art Brut.”

【Cubism and Its Influence】
Focusing on Cubism, one of the most significant artistic movements of the early 20th century, this section features works in which artists sought to capture time and multiple perspectives within a single image, moving beyond the traditional reliance on linear perspective.

【The World of Reflections】
Throughout history, mirrors have been regarded not only as optical devices but also as mysterious portals reflecting another world beyond their surface. This section showcases works by contemporary artists that make use of mirrored reflections.

【Urban Melancholy】
The loneliness, anxiety, and sense of aimlessness brought about by modern urbanization have long served as recurring themes in art. This section features works that depict various facets of life in the modern city.

【Stripes】
Although stripes are used today in countless contexts, they were long regarded in the West as a pattern associated with the devil. This section features works that employ stripes, a motif that has since become both an important and familiar form of expression for artists and designers.

【Special Exhibit: Dubuffet and Art Brut】
Art Brut (raw art) is a term coined in the 1940s by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe works created outside the boundaries of formal artistic training and established art institutions. Through works by Dubuffet himself, together with archival materials formerly owned by art critic Yoshiaki Tono from the museum’s collection, this exhibit traces the origins and development of Art Brut.
