This exhibition is a retrospective of the works of Shinro Ohtake, born and raised in Tokyo during the period of high economic growth, based on seven themes――Self/Other, Memory, Time, Transposition, Dreams/Retina, Layer/Stratum, and Sound――.
Since his spectacular debut in the early 1980s, Shinro Ohtake (b. 1955) has been at the forefront of the art world with his ferocious creative drive, working on an enormous number of projects ranging from paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, videos, picture books, sounds, essays, installations, and ginormous structures. In recent years, he has gained an international reputation as a leading contemporary Japanese artist, participating in two major international exhibitions, documenta(13),kassel (2012, Germany) and La Biennaledi Venezia,55th International Art Exhibition,Venice (2013, Italy). This exhibition, the first large-scale retrospective since the Zen-Kei: Retrospective 1955–2006 held in 2006, comprises approximately 500 works centered around seven themes, including some that have been featured in international exhibitions. The exhibition traces the trajectory of the artist's work, which has spanned nearly half a century under the theme of “what’s already there,” and will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the world of his work without regard to chronological order, provide an opportunity to get inside the head of a dynamic individual who is continually creating.
